We welcome you to the first Faith Formation Friday Fireside Films! This month’s movie is Women Talking. The widely acclaimed novel, Women Talking, written by Miriam Toews, found great interest among those who read this book last winter and then participated in the discussion sessions led by Ruth Robinson. The book was made into a movie that is scheduled for a showing in the the Fireside Room at ACC on Friday, April 28, at 1:30 pm. The film, scripted and produced in 2022, by Sarah Pauley, was nominated for and won the 2023 Academy Award for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and was nominated for best picture. The film and the novel concerned a true event of recent history. A number of women and girls in a geographically isolated religious community located in Bolivia had been regularly sedated and violated by men in the community. Once the perpetrators were discovered and arrested for their crimes, the women of the community met to decide what action they would need to take with regard to the situation.
Forgiveness, submission, blame, flight or fight, and who would or would not be included in the effect of their decision were thoroughly investigated in the light of the religious and social mores of the community. This film will open all these issues for our personal conclusions. You are invited to join us for the film at 1:30 and to linger for 15-30 minutes to discuss.
