In recognition of National Daiquiri Day, let’s look at things with alcohol.
National Daiquiri Day happens each year on July 19, when some people fill their glasses with this rum-based cocktail. Did you know the daiquiri was likely invented by Cuban miners? An engineer named Jennings Cox supervised a mine in a village named Daiquiri in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. After work, Cox and his colleagues would gather at the local bar. One day Cox mixed Bacardi, sugar, and lime into a glass of ice. Named after the Daiquiri mines, the drink became a popular staple in Havana.
Did you drink anything with alcohol before it was actually legal for you to do so? How and when did you learn to drink wine (if you did)? For many young people, turning the age of 21 years is a rite of passage to real adulthood, and comes with certain freedoms as well as responsibilities. Care to share something on this topic?
We’ll continue to Zoom for our Memoir gatherings so that those who are far away, or far from a car, might join and enjoy our little group. Let Ruth Robinson know if you wish to participate and she’ll send you Zoom link. Reminder: you may choose to join in the fun verbally without the pressure of having to put something down on paper. Written memoirs are encouraged as always.
