Zoom Lectio Divina

  • Arlington Community Church 52 Arlington Avenue Kensington, CA, 94707 United States (map)

Lectio Divina is a meditative practice of the Western Church that dates back to the third century as a way of contemplating Scripture and Christ. This is a different way of listening to God’s word than the typical Bible study might offer.

We start with prayer asking for unity as we enter sacred space and time with the Word. You may want to light a candle or set out an object that has meaning for you to create sacred space.

First, we will slowly and prayerfully read the text. The Gospel reading is Luke 1:39-55.

You will be asked what word or phrase gets your attention or pulls at your heart. We will simply linger with that. You may speak as you are so moved. Please don’t feel obligated to say something.

Second, we will read the passage again.

It’s good when someone else reads so we can hear a different voice. We will enter the word reflecting on what our “still speaking God” is saying, or offering, or asking of you. Also, reflect on what feelings are arising within you.

Third, we will read the passage for the last time.

We will be asked how we feel we are to respond and what insights have we gleaned or how you feel. God might be expecting you to respond? We will read the passage one last time and sit quietly in God’s presence.

Remember, to make “I” statements. We will speak from our own mind, heart, and experience.

There are no right or wrong answers. The answers are your answers. The goal is to create safe and sacred space where we can be with God’s word and each other.

 Peace and Wonder, Rev. Barbara
